Growing Herbs In Your Kitchen
Healthful eating can be a tremendous struggle in today’s fast-food world, with overindulgence and a lack of understanding of cooking basics. Making a healthy meal at home can seem daunting to many, and making it tasty and healthy can feel even more so! How can we make a simple healthy meal with amped-up flavor without the typical sugary or MSG-ridden sauce? My answer is fresh herbs! Fresh herbs give you a powerful flavor with so many benefits! Culinary herbs are the backbone of many traditional meals; it’s what made grandma’s cooking so much more than anything you could buy from a store. Herbs infuse love and many health-boosting benefits to boot! You can buy herbs from the store; of course, the downside I find is the waste that happens, and of course, the quality deteriorates once the herbs are cut. The solution? Grow herbs at home! Herbs are an excellent beginner’s garden experiment! Many will happily grow in your sunny kitchen window in a little container. Growing your own herbs help your family feel more ownership over the food you prepare, gives you 100% fresh organic herbs and gives you one more reason to dive into cooking at home. Where should you start? I recommend starting with just a few herbs to experiment with growing. Some of my favorite beginner herbs are: Parsley is an excellent all-purpose herb! Rich in antioxidants and known to have bone health and cancer-fighting properties. Cilantro is one that people either love or hate. We love cilantro in our house since Taco Tuesday is a favorite day! It is also a fantastic fresh herb for a fresh green salad. The neat part is that cilantro has some pretty amazing health benefits. Several studies have connected eating cilantro with reduced symptoms of cognitive diseases like Alzheimer’s, reduced anxiety, blood sugar management, and can even help prevent food borne illnesses. Peppermint is a super easy herb to grow. Peppermint can be used for infused water, tea, and some ethnic dishes. It has an intense flavor and is known for easing bloating and indigestion. Beware that this herb will spread! It’s best planted in a container. Basil is a wonderful herb to have fresh for dishes like pesto! It also boasts of health benefits such as reduced memory loss and depression associated with chronic stress, reduced stroke damage, improved fasting blood sugar, and reduced blood pressure to name just a few. Basil is a delicate herb. Once it is picked, treat it gently. |
