A New Year, A New You
The new year is upon us and we are ready to go– FULL STEAM AHEAD! We have our new year’s resolutions all figured out and you know exactly what you will achieve. Just like… last year? Oh heavens. Last year… Well. We all had good intentions right?!
I have seen so many people… to include myself … set resolutions and truly have the best intentions but because they didn’t have a plan in place the “resolutions” fell apart at the seems or self destructed on or before February 14th… You know. The big “L” day.
Since we know this is a huge issue for us why are we not doing something different than we did before? Why are we not tackling the greatness of this new beginning and spring season in our own lives a little differently? Simple. No one has ever told us how to do it. Until today. Today we are going to turn your New Year’s Resolutions into powerful packets of kryptonite.
The first thing you want to do is assess your New Year’s Resolutions and ask yourself the following questions:
- Are these resolutions truly important to me?
- How bad to I want to achieve this?
- Is it is a measurable goal?
- Is it obtainable and if yes how long will it logically take?
If it passes the test then it is time to transform your resolutions into goals. A quantitative measurable destination.
Now let’s get started on having a successful launch to 2018!!
- Take your New Year’s Resolution and call it a big goal because goals are meant to be achieved and resolutions are something that is just fun.
- If you don’t have one create a goal for each of the four quadrants of your life: Health and wellness, family and relationships, finances, and personal growth.
- Determine how long it will take you to achieve each of your goals. It can be different for each goal in each quadrant.
- Divide your big goals into 4 smaller milestones that will get you to your one big goal.
- Set a calendar date for when you want each milestone to be due for each of your goals.
- Determine which tools or support you will need to achieve your goals.
With a set structure in place you can’t lose. If you need more help or direction please do not hesitate to ask.
Here is an example:
Sally wants to lose 120 pounds this year. Based on the rule of 1-2 pounds per week average she can comfortably but aggressively lose 52- 104 pounds but she knows she has repeatedly failed in the past. Because she doesn’t want to fail again she decides to rethink her goal and sets her weight loss goal for the year at 60 pounds. This puts her weight loss goal for each month at 5 pounds which is a little over 1 pound a week. She feel fairly confident that she can achieve this goal but she really wants to succeed so she has a plan to reassess the situation after the first month. She gets in contact with her coach and shares her goals so she can find the tools and support she needs to succeed.
This of course only addresses one area of Sally’s 4 areas of focus so she has to look at her other areas as well.
To begin choose one goal from one quadrant. Once you have that goal and the milestones laid out then you can go to the next goal for the next quadrant. Repeat this process 4 times and you are finished and ready to get going.
